If you are interested in trying some of your own intarsia (and if you have a scroll saw, you really should give it a shot) you will definitely want to check out Judy Roberts aptly named web site, Intarsia.com. Just tons and tons of great patterns.
Patterns such as the one Randy Cosgrove used to make this delightful piece:
(The picture wire was only temporary to take a shot of the finished piece) Randy has been making intarsia pieces for a few years now and offers a few more tips:
  • There is a lot of sanding involved and the best thing I found to soften the edges is a pneumatic sander that chucks into the drill press. You can pump it up to be as hard or as soft as you want and it really makes getting an evenly rounded edge easier.
  • I usually do the finish sanding on each piece with a 220 grit mop sander before assembly. Seems to give the pieces a nice burnish.
  • It became a lot less messy when I finally got around to rigging up a small hose from my dust collector to “hover” around the sander.

I should have spent a little more time explaining the advantage to using a miter sled, and actually showed that in Fridays video.
What I showed was cutting a miter on the same side of the sled, which obviously defeats the beauty of using a miter sled. Essentially, you just need to ensure that the two "fences" are exactly 90 degrees. That is the critical part. If they are slightly off from 45 degrees to the blade, thats okay. Just make sure you cut each piece on opposite fences and they will add up to 90 degrees.
And, I want to know about your vises. No, not your vices. You can keep those secret. Never really thought much about vises before, but well, anyway, heres a video:

A few quick updates about yesterdays quilt rack video. I also wanted to thank Wil Wilson, who sent me an HVLP sprayer! Im looking forward to using it for applying lacquer, and I hope save money.
*****I also meant to post this last week and forgot. I recently sent my tostonera to Hilah Johnson -- my favorite YouTube chef -- to see what she could do with it. Heres her video. Good stuff!

Overall, Im pretty happy with the way my router table turned out. I still cant use it until I make my router lift. I hope to get started on that soon so I can get this thing in use. Once in a while its fun to work on a really big project, and to me this one is huge, but I dont think I would have the patience to do it all the time. Looking forward to getting back to some smaller projects.
My wife showed me a picture she took at some store. It was a "jewelry tree". Basically, it looks like a tree without leaves: all sorts of branches. You store and display jewelry by hanging it from the branches. Rings, necklaces, bracelets...whatever. Sounds like a fun project. It was made out of metal but if I can, Id like to figure out a way to make it out of wood. Still pondering those branches.
I wanted to post this video with Fridays video, but YouTube has been foiling my effort for some reason. Finally got it uploaded today. Just to answer a few of the questions about this build.
