Since I didnt have a Halloween project in last weeks video, I thought I would make another Halloween video. I really didnt know where this project was going until I got about halfway through it. Once I started laying out the individual bones, it became clearer. I thought about running a stiff wire through the bones so that the hand could be bent into various shapes, but drilling straight holes through the fingers proved nearly impossible. I suppose the way to have done this would be to drill the holes before sculpting the bones. So I ended up inserting small dowel pins and gluing it together. I made this bony hand almost completely with my 1" belt sander. Its really a fun tool to shape wood.
A few of the many viewer photos posted on the WWMM Facebook page this past week.
*****Check out this incredible set Doug DeYoung made from an oak wine barrel. I can totally imagine a bunch of these made for a bar or restaurant.
I love how Ivan Parrish made the "bricks" in this windmill planter by scoring lines with an angle grinder before assembly.
Moving on to shop projects, heres a storage idea from Eric Johnson and a great way to store saw blades.
And finally a couple of small, clever projects. Lyndon Hare made these drink coasters from two different types of oak with mahogany inlays, the stand has an oak bottom and lilac sides. Love natural-edge projects.
Heres a simple cookbook/iPad stand Chad Fry made for his wife. The wood burning gives it a lot of character. Its a flexible design: I recently saw something similar used as a ukulele stand!

Project preview
Heres a sneak peak of what to expect tomorrow. Yes, it was painful to apply those blue and green colors!
Its been a quiet week for me online. My dad came out for a visit turning this week into a vacation of sorts. But we did manage to put together a quick project for tomorrows video. Heres what some of you have been up to. Definitely a lot of springtime projects getting made. Last year I made a picnic tote for storing paper plates and a keeping paper napkins from blowing away. Bill Wilson made this one double sided for holding condiments and utensils.

Heres a project Ive recently added to my to-do list. Ron Ward made this sign post for his yard with all different sign shapes pointing to important and memorable places in his life. I just love this idea.
*****
If you are looking for a very simple project to get you into the yard this spring, try making my 2x4 garden bench. You can build it in a weekend. I love seeing how people have modified it too. Check out
Horatiu Simions version in Romania. Love the bright paint and storage area.
*****
Have you tried any pallet projects yet? Heres Arnold Knoches take on my rustic potting bench. These things are really fun to make.
*****
And heres a good idea from Bill Kirbym, who made this shoe rack using reclaimed pallet wood. The butterflies and details on this really set it apart.
*****
Of course, just because its spring doesnt mean you cant make indoor projects! Gregory Morel made one of my charging stations using plywood and exotic lumber. That combination is always interesting.

Finally, I wanted to show off some projects from 16-year-old Connor Mcallister in Australia. He recently got a lathe and turned this honey dipper. I told him that is one of those projects I think about every single time i turn something on my lathe. One of these days maybe Ill actually make one!
Connor also took and old wardrobe and converted it into an aviary for his grandfather using pallet wood for the doors. Way to go man.
Im getting a head start this week! Ive already bought lumber and have a working design for this weeks project: an herb planter. Keep up with my progress by using #herbplanter on Twitter or Keek.

First, I wanted to share a couple of cool piggy banks that have shown up in my email. This one is from Dave Rooney whose granddaughter is a princess. So cute!
Jeff Newhook made this bank which isnt a piggy at all, but rather an owl for his 4-year-old niece. He also made a video of the process. Check it out!

I also want to share this tray that Sergio Aparicio made using strips of plywood and metal door pulls. I think its a great idea, and something you might consider making on a cold winter afternoon. I love the look of using exposed plywood edges.

***** Project previewThis week Ive been working on a rustic bath cabinet using some of the pallet wood I recently picked up. I shot this video this morning to give you an idea of what to expect. Im putting a lot of finish on it to protect it from a damp bathroom environment. Video and plans tomorrow! Read More..
Congratulations to ????? ????????? in Greece who just became a father to a baby boy. Somehow Nick still finds time to make some projects in the shop. Love this wine rack. Would make a great gift.
Heres a clever idea for storing keys:

Another great idea for an entryway, heres a white mahogany shelf from Bill Wilson. Adding the cork board is such a clever idea.
Hes been making a few wall shelves. Heres another recent version with some great saw work:

Pallets! Fred your woodworking passion for free. Garfield Hiscock went from this...
To this charging station! Love the way that wood looks when its cleaned up.

If you are willing to spend some time and a little elbow grease, free lumber seems readily available in one form or another. Kevin Maxson took the time to disassemble an old cedar armoire someone had given away on Craigslist. Made a folding stool.
***** More pallet potting tables! Heres one Paul Jobbins built earlier this year. Plue another good idea: a greenhouse.
*****
And heres Kenny Boothes potting bench made from reclaimed pallets. The vertical frame and shelf are from reclaimed pine boards he helped his father build 45 years ago.

Small space woodworking. Matthew Hallsworth in Merseyside, England proves you dont have to have a huge shop. Hes converted his van into a workshop! Check out his workbench:

Got a note from Sean Stanlick who made this DVD cabinet in his senior year of high school. He designed it to look like those old video stores that displayed the movies on their edges and at an angle. Pretty cool. Plus, Sean has compiled a set of instructions on how to build it! Download the 24 page PDF plans here. Thanks Sean!

One of the projects on my to-do list this year is a pair of nightstands for the bedroom. Pete Collin built this one that really reminds me of the mid-century style furniture I have been building recently. I just love this design and may make something similar.

Finally, I had to share this beautiful spirits cabinet Larry Briski made out of cherry as a wedding gift for his daughter. I love heirloom projects like this. Beautiful work.
Ive been busy remodeling my shop over the past two weeks. By rearranging a bit of the furniture, I freed up quite a bit of wall space. This week, I built a sliding door cabinet to hold, well stuff. I have no doubt it will fill up quickly! Heres a preview of the project. Video and free plans tomorrow!
In case I ever become a grape farmer and bottle my own wine, my son Wyatt designed this hipster bottle label that will work out perfectly. ("Its so exclusive, youve probably never heard of it.")
Over the years I have had a number of people ask me to build a wine rack or cabinet. Oddly enough, I live near the heart of Californias Wine Country, but am not a wine drinker myself which probably accounts for why it has taken me this long to make one.
I decided to make a display cabinet for those of us who like to keep a few bottles on hand for special occasions or guests. I designed it to resemble a wooden crate, possibly one that has been taken apart and hobbled together for a new purpose. I also wanted the bottle labels to show, making the entire unit a decorative piece: I like the juxtaposition of the rustic assembly with fine wine. The shelves tilt to the side to keep the corks from drying out.
Monetize your woodworking
Rustic projects using recycled wood are very trendy at the moment. This project would sell well at craft fairs. (Probably starting at around $80 - $100.) It is simple to make and if you use free pallet wood the profit margin is huge. Buyers like to feel they are part of an effort to reduce waste, and expensive wine displayed in a unique cabinet is a great conversation starter.
Jack Read, the box-making king, checks in with this heart-shaped box made from orange agate and redwood. Just gorgeous!
*****
Dean Morrell made a bandsaw box for each of his children on their 5th birthday. (Such a cool idea.) This one is redwood and douglas fir. The drawer handle is made from a foam brush handle.
*****
Keith Mealy made this butternut box about 25 years ago and based it on one found on an ancient Greek shipwreck.
*****
Paul Brown made two of these tea light candle holders for his nieces when they got engaged.
*****
Sergeant First Class Ron Sims tried out my ink-jet transfer method on this heart he made for his wife. I have yet to try that technique on anything besides black ink yet. Looks like it works well! Neat stand, too.
*****
Very cool double-heart display with engraved "I love You" by Stefans Holzwerkstatt.
Finally, not really a heart box, but wow, such a beautiful carving by Matic Marholt.
